Atlanta artist Ellen White travels to the mountains to paint en Plein Air.

Ellen teaches a two day workshop monthly hosted by Crabtree Creek Gallery. Plein Air literally means "painting out of doors." This technique offers its own set of challenges, which we address in the two day workshop. Going from set up to clean up. By using the fundamentals of composition, color and value, students get a sense of what it takes to paint en plein air. The next scheduled plein air workshop is November 21st and 22nd. After receiving a degree in commercial design, Ellen has had a long and successful career as an Art Director in print and television. Currently she paints full time in Atlanta, Georgia. She is a member of the Portrait Society of America, Oil Painters of America, Quinlan Visual Arts Center and Landscape Artists International.

The June Plein Air Painting Workshop was held June 20 and 21. We enjoyed beautiful weather and challenged ourselves with a variety of subjects. We worked on seeing and capturing the values and colors of the North Carolina light. The next workshop dates have been changed to July 25 and 26. The 2009 Plein Air Painting Workshop season has begun.
May was the starting month with beautiful weather and talented students.
Each workshop deals with the various aspects of painting on location.
We learn to see the colors and values of the scene as well as composition and perspective. Each day is in a different location around the Burnsville area, so students get to stretch their seeing abilities.
The next workshop is June 20 and 21. There is still time to call Peggy at 828-675-0612 and save a spot.

Open House reception for new artist

An open house reception for our recently acquired artists, Rachel Clearfield and Cathie Fitzjohn will be held Thursday evening, September 11th 5:30 - 7:30 pm @ the Crabtree Creek Gallery, Micaville, NC.

Rachel Clearfield, born in Manchester, England was a self taught child prodigy, composing poetry and illustrating her poems with her beautiful paintings. Her body of work can be viewed in galleries throughout the United States.
The artist calls her present mode of painting "classic visionary" inspired by the legendary masters of the Renaissance.

Cathie Anders Fitzjohn a resident of Leicester, NC has always been passionate about all aspects of art. Since taking her first class in stained glass in 1980 it has been her primary focus. She has designed windows for homes up and down the east coast. Working with glass encompasses all of her favorite things: color, design, and fabrication.

Turning Up the Heat

July will be hotter than a firecracker at Crabtree Creek Gallery, as we welcome an exciting new glass blowing talent guaranteed to raise the thermostat in the Western North Carolina art community.

Ben Johnson, an Indiana native and graduate of Kent State University, currently a resident glass blower at the Energy Xchange, will be our featured artist throughout the month of July. We will kick off the exhibit with an OPEN HOUSE RECEPTION on Thursday, July 3rd, 5:30 - 8:00pm. Come join us and enjoy an evening of art and libations.

"Different Shades of White"

We are delighted to present this months featured artists, Alan White and Ellen White. They constitute month's theme of "Different Shades of White."

Alan and Allison White retired from richly-textured careers in public education to the mountains of western North Carolina with a the dream of becoming potters and with an understanding that potters are ceaselessly and continually "becoming". Each new pot is a touchstone in the process-envisioning, forming, glazing, firing - learning. Designs are motivated by a desire to create works of simple beauty and daily function which capture the restive spirit of the mountains and blend it with classic forms of antiquity.

Ellen currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia where she works mainly in oils. She has participated in numerous group and juried shows. She is currently participating in the 2008-2010 Landscape Artists International World Tour.

The gallery is evolving with the introduction of new artists and craftsmen. Our changing inventory will highlight the artists best works.

Don't forget the Studio Tour, June 13, 14, and 15! We will be showing lots of new work. So stop by for a visit.

Crabtree Creek Gallery is open for its fifth season on Friday, May 2nd. We are anxious to welcome back our friends for the 2008 season ( May 2nd - December 20th). Please stop by if you are in the area.
